Bukonde Women’s Initiative

Investing in women today for a better tomorrow

Buwi translates to giving in Lugisu, a language spoken in Eastern Uganda. We are a community-based organization established in 2019 in Bukonde Subcounty in Mbale, Uganda. Our goal is to become an effective community empowerment model that combines accessible skill training programs and mentorship opportunities with counseling services catered to girls and women.

BUWI takes a grassroots approach to deliver a modified version of BRAC’s proven Poverty Graduation Intervention model. BUWI focuses on making highly requested skills training programs accessible while providing mentorship and counseling to the members. After graduation from the skills program, the some members are connected to a local community microfinance for financial support for their business venture, and are given opportunities to market their products in the community. The counseling program provides appropriate support to different community demographics and works closely with Mbale’s Probation Office to connect members at imminent risk of abuse or child marriages to government programs that can provide effective intervention.
